The Future of Metrics in Apache Pulsar

Metrics exposed by Pulsar are fundamental to operating it in Production, yet it has many caveats: high topic count forces you to report it in namespace level only; histograms can’t be used properly in Grafana, and more; Under the hood, the implementation has significant problems making it hard to work with metrics as a contributor. In this lecture I will present the current problems, both from a user and a committer perspective. Next, I’ll present my proposal to fix all of those problems, powered by switching to OpenTelemetry Java SDK. I’ll wrap up with this journey current location and future plans.
